Long Tan

196 Fifth Ave in Brooklyn, @ Berkeley Place

Beautiful, festive red-and-wood decor sets the stage for a great night out with friends. The cocktails are terrific, the watermelon martini is better than the mango martini, but both are great, and everything made with ginger beer is spicy and stirring. The blood orange cosmo had gone out of season by the time we got there. Unfortunately, once the dishes arrived, the table decorations - darling little live bamboo shoots in tiny pots - started to seem like the most appetizing things on the table. The pad thai was sour and weird, and the vegetarian yellow curry had far too much sugar and apparently no salt at all. The rice was bland and not aromatic. Luckily the awesome drinks carried the night.

I had a good time but in future, when I'm in the neighborhood, I think I'll insist on going to Nana, two blocks north and across the street, for far superior food but a less happening vibe.
