Plugins in Textpattern

Plugins in Textpattern are distributed as base64-encoded serialized gobbledygook. Why, I have no idea. All I know is that it means you can't just view the source code on the web; you have to install the plugin (by copying the gobbledygook string from within the quotes on the plugin's page, then pasting it into the Textpattern plugin installation window) and then browse to the source code from inside your Textpattern installation. I guess that means they're easier to install than MT plugins were, but I still found it pretty weird at first. Anyway, if you like PHP, you can create them using the plugin template (instructions from Dean) or the easier, Teutonic, jlg plugin creator, which I am too lazy to download. The problem with Dean's template is that your function need to be formatted with heredoc syntax, it won't just work if you paste in normal PHP. If you click on the "plugin template" link above and scroll down to the word "heredoc" there is a great explanation there. There's also an Improved plugin template that doesn't suffer from this problem.

Anyway, I wrote one to format the dates in the style I like, which I call iiiiiDate. It's a lot shorter than iiiiiDate for Movable Type.
