The Far-Out Foods of Brooklyn: excellent article by food writer Melissa Clark that includes huitlacoche, salty lemonade with pickled plums, and all sorts of sketchy-sounding animal parts. (I was pretty shocked that ais kachang ("ABC") and beef tendon were considered exotic foods, but my stomach constricted at the thought of the lamb's head: I suppose it's a matter of what you grew up with.)

Made some incredibly delicious brownies last night from a double chocolate chip mix sold by Ghirardelli (pronounched "firardelli" as in "ghoti"?) that I picked up at the PathMark after a fairly good red curry chicken dinner at Kobma. Such a pleasure to shop in a grocery store with aisles wider than I am tall, the closest thing to prairie I've found in New York.

Then woke up at 4:30am to the sound of helicopter blades whipping just outside my window and the trees quivering in the wind. Lay there in anger for a while, then stuck my head out the window to see the tip of a helicopter's running lights over the roof of the building next door. Called 311, which gave me the number of the FAA, but by the time I'd launched notepad to write the number down, the chopper had headed north over Flatbush. what the fuck?

And leaves are starting to fall from the trees, exposing a hole in the trunk of the one outside our living room, where two birds are building a nest...
