The recent launch of the MacBook Air has made me think a lot about my perfect computer, which the Air is not. My perfect computer is the size and weight of a trade paperback, and has a screen and a stylus so I can write in it like a journal or use it to watch movies on the subway. It's thick enough for a standard DVI output and has lots of USB ports for docking at home or work. It has a battery life of over 12 hours and when it's jostled in your bag as you walk, that helps recharge the battery. The screen looks like just paper and doesn't emit light like an LCD screen does, but has a comparable refresh rate at super-high resolution and full color. It has an ethernet port and built-in wireless and an 80GB flash drive. It plays CDs and DVDs but has no moving parts. Perfect sound comes out of invisible speakers or wireless bluetooth headphones, and it has a built-in camera with 5 megapixels, SLR quality. It runs OS X, but it's even cheaper than an iPod Shuffle and when you buy one, Apple builds a well or funds a vaccination clinic in some underprivileged town. It has a special mode so you can safely use it on an airplane during takeoff or landing, and you don't have to take it out of your bag when you go through security because the people at the FAA love it so much. If you have writer's block, it comforts you. If you're lost, you can push a button and it goes into "map mode" to show you where you are, even underground. When someone that you would really hit it off with walks past you on the street, it plays a cheery tune that only you and they can hear. It's furry, and purrs quietly when you pet it. In the rain, it unfolds into an umbrella. When you're carrying one, you can fly.
