Selva did this meme, and I am a follower, so. Linked files will be removed after a few days, as usual. (UPDATE: Files renamed from .m4a to .mp4 because my server wasn't serving them . . . try re-downloading.)
Total Volume Of Music On My Computer: 9.57 GB (I am lazy about scanning).
The Last CD I Bought: Xiu Xiu, Knife Play. Their first and my favorite.
Song Playing Right Now: Lisa Germano, "My Secret Reason". Not one I really care for, just happened to hit it.
5 songs I listen to a lot:
- 64 - Bonnie "Prince" Billy and the Marquis de Tren. I've mentioned the album this is from, "Get On Jolly," before; in fact I think it was actually recommended by a commenter on this site (Nikhil?). Anyway, in this one, Bonnie Billy (aka Will Oldham) is reading his interpretation of Rabindranath Tagore's song 64 over a track pre-recorded by the Marquis (aka Mick Turner). Favorite lyric: all of it. "Get on jolly" is a pun on the original name of the text, the "Gitanjali."
- Moments - Red House Painters. Jonathan said this track is one of two on Ocean Beach that were actually written before Kozelek got signed and lost his spark. Anyway I never look at the long meadow without thinking summery fields I call my own, and I look at the long meadow a lot.
- Dr. Troll - Xiu Xiu. Most phoenixy song I listen to constantly. I love the screechy noise (electric violin?) that dominates the chorus parts, e.g. from 0:51. Favorite lyric: the part starting from it would be so much easier if she was a real girl. Aside from Nick Drake, I don't know any of the artists namechecked in this song.
- Water and Air - Cat Power. I apologize in advance that the song is about a failed suicide pact. I'm not really into that aspect of it. I just like the lyric about bailing on going to a party. I guess that is shallow.
- To My God, In His Sickness - Philip Levine. This is a poem, not a song. I'm not even sure it's that good a poem, but it works well for me when I hear it. Favorite parts include
My coat was the color of rain, and six gray sparrows sang
and Can the blood flow back into the twigs of the child?
Do you have answers to these questions? If so, pls point me to your answers in the comments, or write them up or whatever.

- It never occurred to me that the Cat Power song was literally about what it is literally about. But on another read I think it undeniably is.
Lisa Germano is goddess! The end.

- You must be decisive, and assign the meme to five others!
— Jim 05.05.20, 8:27pm #

- 1)total volume of music on computer: oh, geez. i dunno. not very much. about a thousand songs. i’m not sure how much space that occupies.
2)last cd you bought:wow. i think the last cd i bought was bjork’s medulla. but the last cds i acquired are johnny cash’s songs from san quentin (?) and a two disc roots manuva album the name of which escapes me.
3)the song you’re listening to right now: sonic youth—bull in the heather.
4)five songs you listen too a lot:
a)if she wants me by belle and sebastian. it’s such a catchy tune.
b)i’m a cuckoo by belle and sebastian. it reminds me of spring and makes me want to drink sencha.
c)bridges and balloons by joanna newsom. i enjoy her voice. her lyrics are often clever. and when they’re not clever they’re nonsensical. i like it.
d)si tu disais by francoiz breut. i can’t get enough of those strings. she also has a great voice. if you can find the video for the song in its entirety it’s worth watching. she made the illustrations.
e)tribute by tenacious d. it’s funny. so there.

- (for the cottons and the stickpins)
I wrote this up on my blog, then accidentally hit Cmd-Q instead of saving the entry. Given my policy of always taking the advice to my spine, autonomous nervous system, and other concealed intelligences, I cursed loudly, and let it all go.
— Jim 05.05.26, 10:00am #
- er—make that “taking the advice of my spine, &c.”
